An engagement photoshoot at the base of Mount Maunganui is hard to beat, and this mid-winter session in Tauranga proved exactly why. We shot this in July, but the Bay of Plenty delivered one of its signature mild winter evenings, perfectly suited to a romantic beach engagement shoot. Lisa and Jaydee were all in from the start - keen for a coastal setting, relaxed, and completely present with one another. Lisa’s flowing, Grecian-inspired dress paired beautifully with Jaydee’s cream and tan outfit, creating a timeless, effortless look against the sand, sea, and iconic Mauao backdrop. After carefully dodging the rain and timing our session with the incoming tide, we were rewarded with a soft winter sunset that painted the sky in warm hues.
My approach to engagement photography is all about connection over perfection. Rather than stiff, overly posed shots, I guide couples with gentle prompts, movement, and space to be themselves - walking, laughing, leaning in, and simply enjoying each other. As the sun slipped behind Mount Maunganui, the session naturally slowed into something quieter and more intimate. We continued our walk around the base track photographing into blue hour, when the sky deepened and the photoshoot took on a calm, cinematic feel - one of my favourite times for engagement photography. That’s always the moment when everything clicks: the nerves fade, the posing becomes instinctive, and the connection takes centre stage. This Mount Maunganui engagement session was a beautiful reminder that love doesn’t need perfect conditions - just the right timing, a little trust, and space to be exactly as you are.
