Beautiful, Fun Family Photos While Respecting Your Child’s Privacy Online

As a family photographer based in Tauranga, I’ve noticed more and more parents wanting something completely valid and understandable: beautiful family photos without sharing their children’s faces online.

Whether you’re choosing to keep your baby off social media, limiting your child’s digital footprint, or simply wanting more privacy around your family life, I want you to know - your boundaries are always respected here at Claire Elizabeth Photography.

You do not have to choose between protecting your child’s privacy and having gorgeous, joy-filled family photos.

As a family photographer in the Bay of Plenty (and a parent myself), I completely understand wanting to preserve your memories while being intentional about what gets shared publicly online. My sessions are relaxed, playful, connection-focused, and designed around your family’s comfort levels - including how your images are photographed and shared.

And honestly? Some of the most emotive, storytelling images don’t need faces at all.

How We Can Create Beautiful Family Photos While Keeping Children’s Faces Hidden

1. Movement, Play & Connection Over “Looking at the Camera”

My family sessions are never stiff or overly posed. I focus on genuine moments - cuddles, piggybacks, running through fields, collecting shells at the beach, tickles with Mum, or little hands wrapped around Dad’s fingers.

When children are busy playing and connecting naturally, it allows me to photograph your family in ways that feel authentic while also keeping faces discreet if desired.

Think:

  • Walking hand-in-hand along the beach
  • Snuggles with faces tucked into shoulders
  • Kids running ahead through long grass
  • Pulling funny faces at each other
  • Laughing faces turned to look at parents
  • Little feet, tiny hands, messy curls, and all the beautiful in-between details.

These images still tell your family’s story beautifully without needing your child’s face front-and-centre.

2. Creative Angles & Storytelling Photography

There are so many artistic ways to photograph families while protecting children’s identities.

Some of my favourite techniques include:

  • Photographing from strategic angles
  • Using wide landscape shots
  • Capturing silhouettes at golden hour
  • Focusing on connection instead of direct portraits
  • Cropping intentionally during editing
  • Documenting interactions rather than “smile at the camera” moments

This style of photography often feels even more emotional and timeless because the focus becomes the feeling of the moment rather than perfection.

As a Tauranga photographer covering the wider Bay of Plenty and Waikato, I photograph families at beaches, waterfalls, forests, paddocks, and beautiful outdoor locations where storytelling imagery naturally shines.

3. Keeping Babies & Children Off Social Media

Many families now choose to keep babies off social media entirely, and I fully support that decision.

Some parents:

  • Don’t want their child’s face publicly searchable online
  • Are concerned about AI and image misuse
  • Want their children to decide their own online presence when they’re older
  • Simply prefer a more private family life

Whatever your reason, you never need to explain or justify it with me.

I also understand that privacy preferences can exist on a spectrum. Some families are comfortable with private galleries but not social media sharing. Others prefer no online sharing at all. Some are happy with images where faces are turned away or partially obscured.

Your comfort level leads the process.

4. My Approach as a Family Photographer in Tauranga

I want family photo sessions to feel fun, relaxed, and pressure-free - especially for parents.

You do not need perfectly behaved children.

You do not need kids smiling at the camera every second.

And you absolutely do not need to compromise your parenting choices around privacy.

My role is to create meaningful images that feel like your family.

That might mean:

  • Adventuring together at the beach
  • Playing games during sunset
  • Snuggling your newborn at home
  • Exploring nature together in the Bay of Plenty or Waikato
  • Capturing connection in a way that feels safe and respectful for your family

I always discuss social media and image-sharing preferences with families before posting anything online, and families are welcome to opt out entirely.

Family Photography That Respects Your Boundaries

Choosing to protect your child’s online privacy does not mean missing out on documenting your family memories.

Some of the most heartfelt images are the quiet in-between moments; a tiny hand in yours, wind blowing through curls, toes in the sand, a child wrapped around your neck in the biggest cuddle.

Those are the moments worth remembering.

If you’re looking for a Tauranga family photographer who values authentic connection, playful sessions, and respecting your family’s privacy choices, I’d love to create something beautiful with you.

I photograph families throughout Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, the wider Bay of Plenty, and Waikato regions.
